I am officially back on the wagon! After my first half marathon, I am pretty sure I was in the best shape of my life, but soon after that race my life changed. As you know, I recently moved up to Philadelphia to live with my boyf of almost 4 years. I took off a few days from running/working out in the beginning of June because I felt I deserved it after doing really well in the Zooma Annapolis Half Marathon. A few days turned into a week, and then it was my birthday weekend down the shore. Around that time I got the news that I got a job in Philly and would be relocating in 2 short weeks. Then all hell broke loose. I had to come home every night and pack and organize and there was no time to work out. I got up here and all moved in last Thursday, look at the calendar, and realize that it is now July, I haven’t ran or even worked out in a month, and I have the NYC Half Marathon in about 36 days. Man down.
I did my first run in over a month on Tuesday on the glorious Kelly Drive. I did 4 miles, which maybe was pushing it a little bit, after a month of nothing, but I felt pretty good. I went at an easy pace and have been sore the past 2 days. Serves me right! Today I did a 3 mile run and then came home and did a little Shred action. It feels good to get back on the workout wagon. I also feel very lucky that I have a bunch of great running and biking trails right outside my doorstep. I feel like it is going to make all the difference with my training.
I am also going to try something different this time around. Instead of running 5 days a week, I am going to throw a little cross training action in the mix. I think I am going to rotate between biking, running and working out in the gym (elliptical/weights/treadmill). I have been reading Run Less Run Faster and it seems to have worked for people before. It pretty much says you can cross train and do things other than running and you will actually get faster. I hope it works! I also think it will keep me from getting burned out from only running everyday. I also am excited to work out a variety of muscles more regularly than just the ones I use to run. Hopefully it will all be a win win!
KateMonster is running the NYC Half with me next month and she keeps telling me to practice hills, which I didn’t but should have for Zooma. Makes me nervous. I don’t enjoy running hills. I enjoy what they do for my backside, but I don’t enjoy it one bit!
On to breakfast – Do you remember my visit from the Kashi fairy? Well today I had the delightful Summer Berry granola. It was divine. I added it to a bowl of yogurt, banana, strawberries and blueberries. Kashi Summer Berry Granola is made with dried strawberries (so I got a double dose there!), blackberries and kiwis. It is so light and refreshing, I loved it.
Look at how pretty this bowl is! So many colors and textures and flavors. This granola is PERFECT for the summer. It is made with 7 whole grain granola and is mixed with a touch of honey and vanilla flavor. It has a great crunch to it, which I enjoy in my morning granola mix.
Jackson sat by me and watched my enjoy my Summer Berry mix. I think he was jealous and wanted a taste!
