First Reads Winner!

I have been reading from Lacey about the Goodreads First Reads contests for a while now, and just entered myself this past month. First of all, are you a member of Goodreads? If you are not, you totally should be. You can be friends with me on Goodreads here. If you love books and love to read, Goodreads is your friend! You can list books you have read, are reading, and want to read. You can post reviews, read what others think about books, even have a book club (such as the Food Blogger Book Club)! I have learned about so many awesome books from this site. I love it!

Goodreads

Goodreads has a giveaway section on the site called First Reads. Here you can win free copies of pre-released books. I am not sure why I am sharing this, because Lacey and I don’t need anymore competition in winning these books! But I do like to share the love of things I love, so check out First Reads!

I won my first book from First Reads this past weekend. Woohoo! I won a hardcopy version of:

Gertruda’s Oath: A Child, a Promise, and a Heroic Escape During World War II

by Ram Oren

Book Description:

Gertruda's Oath: A Child, a Promise, and a Heroic Escape During World War II

Trapped in the horrors of World War II, a woman and a child embark on a journey of survival in this page-turning true story that recalls the power and the poignancy of Schindler’s List.
Michael Stolowitzky, the only son of a wealthy Jewish family in Poland, was just three years old when war broke out and the family lost everything. His father, desperate to settle his business affairs, travels to France, leaving Michael in the care of his mother and Gertruda Bablinska, a Catholic nanny devoted to the family. When Michael’s mother has a stroke, Gertruda promises the dying woman that she will make her way to Palestine and raise him as her own son.
Written with the invaluable assistance of Michael, now seventy-two and living in New York City, GERTRUDA’S OATH re-creates Michael and Gertruda’s amazing journey. Gripping vignettes bring to life the people who helped ensure their survival, including SS officer Karl Rink, who made it his mission to save Jews after his own Jewish wife was murdered; Rink’s daughter, Helga, who escaped to a kibbutz, where she lived until her recent death; and the Jewish physician Dr. Berman, who aided Michael and Gertruda through the worst of times.
GERTRUDA’S OATH is a story of extraordinary courage and moral strength in the face of horrific events. Like Schindler’s List, it transcends history and religion to reveal the compassion and hope that miraculously thrives in a world immersed in war without end.

The books sounds pretty awesome to me.I love a good book. I can’t wait to get it in the mail! Another fabulous website for the book-lovers out there is Swaptree. Have you heard of it? I know I have mentioned it before, but I wanted to revisit it on the blog because it’s such an amazing concept and I love it!

To use Swaptree, you list items (books, cds, dvds, video games) that you have to trade. You then list items that you want and the Swaptree system, matches you up with other members and you have different trades to choose from. Am I explaining it clearly? Check out the Swaptree How Does It Work description here for more info. It’s super easy, and I use it all the time. I read all the blogs I follow, and when someone mentions a cool book or something, I add it to my Swaptree list. I have swapped a bunch of books. It’s great when you read something and know you won’t read it again, and don’t want it sitting on your shelf taking up space, so you swap it, and get something new to read, or watch or play!

Swaptree also provides postage for you. You can print off a shipping label right from your computer, and don’t have to visit the post office all the time. And you don’t pay more than $2.50 to ship anything. Better than going to a used bookstore!

If you are on Swaptree or Goodreads, let me know what you think! If you aren’t on them, let me know what you think about the concepts. This isn’t a paid endorsement or anything, both sites are free to use, I just love them both and wanted to do a shout out to let all my fabulous readers know about the awesomeness! Spread the website love! If you know of a fabulous site, let me know about it. I am always searching for great new websites!
