Winter Hydration

Just about everyone knows about drinking plenty of fluids when it’s warm outside. Hot, humid weather makes us sweaty and thirsty, so downing a cold glass of water or other beverage sounds good and we make sure to do it regularly. In the winter we’re not quite as aware of our fluid losses, so our focus on drinking isn’t quite as keen. Surprisingly, our fluids losses can be just as great in the winter as during the warm summer months. Even though you might not be dripping wet, you are still perspiring. Respiration, or breathing, is responsible for even greater fluid losses during cold weather. In order for our lungs to stay moist during dry winter weather, the body must supply fluid to the cells of lung tissue and all the way up the trachea, or windpipe, to our mouth. When you breath, droplets of fluid are lost to the dry air. The more active you are, the more you sweat (even in a swimming pool) and your fluid losses from breathing multiply. So it is just as important to focus on hydration in the winter as it is in the summertime.

Drink all day long, and make sure to drink before, during and after exercise.

How much water do you drink on a daily basis?

I generally drink 1.5L while at work then more with my dinner at home and at the gym while exercising. I tend to feel really sluggish if I do not drink enough water before going to work out.

    hi!
I drink about a 1L at work plus a cup or so of tea. I'd like to drink more but I am running to the bathroom once an hour as it is…kind of uncomfortable…hey does everyone else have to go as much as that when they're drinking a lot??
