My Return to Running

Some of you may have noticed that I haven’t been blogging much about running in the past 2 months or so. The reason for that has been that since the Philadelphia Half Marathon I ran in November, I have taken a bit of a running hiatus.

In 6 short months – since May 2009 (thanks to my record keeping on DailyMile) I have logged around 500+ miles pounding the pavement. I have run lots of fun races, pushed myself to the limit, reached new mile markers and embraced my newfound love for running.

I decided to take a running break after my last half marathon for my sanity. I love running, but I am always weary of overdoing it.

I had various other reasons for taking a running break :

1) The Holiday Season – It was a crazy time for everyone so it was nice to be able to step back from running and focus on spending some quality time with family and friends. Also Christmas shopping was a little hectic this year too!

2) Winter – It’s cold in Philly and it has been for a while. Brrrrr! I am not the biggest fan of running in the cold so I try to avoid it whenever possible. It was no coincidence that my running break occurred when the weather started to get snowy and cold!

3) Fear of Burning Out – With lots of back to back races I had felt like I was always in ‘Training Mode.’ It was fabulous to be able to take a step back  from running and give my body a break.

While I was on vacation the past 2 weeks I was pretty good at getting up in the morning of the days that we were at sea all day. I hit up the treadmill bright and early. It felt awesome to have nothing to do all day on the ship -  I was free to run/walk/jog on the treadmill for hours. I stayed on the treadmill about 3 times watching entire movies on the TV that was attached to the machine.

It was a great way for me to get back in my running groove.

During the past 6 weeks or so off I have been trying to integrate strength training and other various forms of cardio in my workout routines. I truly believe its so important to work out your body in lots of different ways! It keeps things fresh and new!

Next Steps:

I am easing my way back into training mode because I have another race right around the corner. Remember when I signed up for the Disney Princess Half Marathon way back when? Well that race is a mere 44 days away! So I have to lace up my sneakers, brave the cold  (while praying for warmer weather) and hit the pavement!

I also received an email while I was away notifying me that I have been accepted into the 2010 NYC Half Marathon this March. Remember when I ran the 2009 NYC Half this August? I think the summer heat in NYC was too much so they moved it, but either way I got accepted from the lottery!

The interesting part about this scenario is that the NYC Half is exactly 2 weeks after the Disney Princess Half.

Man Down.

The closest races I have run together was when I ran the Broad Street 10 Miler followed by my first Half Marathon 28 days later. I thought that was cutting it close, but this is going to be even crazier!

So prepare yourself for lots of running updates!

Who else out there is running the Disney Princess Half and/or the NYC Half with me?

I am in the process of planning a blogger meet up in Disney with Megan so stay tuned for details if you will be down there and way to meet up!

I'm excited your posts will be filled with lots of running! I just started running, and this will definitely pump me up and keep me excited about doing it.

Also, I never knew there was a Disney Princess Half Marathon. My best friend, who just started running too, is obsessed with Disney princesses, so I sent her the link and told her everyone who finishes gets special princess medal. LOL!

I just joined Daily Mile last week and LOVE it! You'll be the first person I add…beside my fiance. Can't wait to read more! 🙂

I really wanted to do the Disney Princess Half, but it just isn't going to work out logistically. I'm headed to San Fransisco instead! Anyway, I'm doing my first half a few weeks later in NH. Can't wait!

Glad to hear you had a nice trip!

I'm running the NYC Half. For charity, since I didn't get in through the lottery.

I am in the same boat with the post Philly half running slump. I'm so much less inclined to go for a run when it has to be on a treadmill or in 30 degree weather. Sounds like you have some fun races to get ready for!
