One Green Monster is NOT Like the Other

I never thought I would ever utter the words that I have found a Green Monster that I didn’t like. I just didn’t think it was possible. I have been hooked on green monsters for the past year, trying lots of new creations, adding some different ingredients, but always keeping the 3 key parts the same – spinach, almond milk & a banana.

With those three key ingredients it’s hard not to love a green monster! I have gone crazy and added pineapple powder, a mango,  and some strawberries to the mix. Adding chia seeds has now become a staple in my everyday mixture. The more berries, the better for a thicker, fruitier monster.

I thought I could never meet a green monster I wouldn’t love!

But boy was I wrong! On Saturday evening, the night before my 5 mile race (which I came in 5th place!) I had a lovely green dinner, but I wanted to add some more nutrients to my meal before I went to bed to rest up for the race.

Fiancé was nice enough to begin to prepare this green monster for me while I was laying out my clothes for the morning. He had everything in the blender and was about to make my monster, but then he said those fated words:

We are out of bananas.

NoOoOoOoOo! The banana is an integral part to the deliciousness of the monster. We had no bananas in the fridge or freezer. It was a travesty!  Without the banana, it’s pretty much milky spinach (which is not for me!) Since everything was already in the blender, I didn’t want to waste the precious spinach, so I had to make a game time decision on what to add to the monster to complete it.

Fiancé suggested yogurt, which initially I thought was gross and then figured I could possibly make it work. I made my best effort to add some additional seeds to improve taste, but it wasn’t meant to be.

It was sad that we were completely out of fruit because I probably could have made it work with anything else, but we had nothing and I didn’t want to waste.

These monsters look about the same, right? Same cup, same straw, close in color. Don’t be fooled! The one on the left is the evil yogurt monster wanna be. The one on the right was created this morning, after an emergency run to the store for bananas! You may not think the green monster is that affected by the banana, but it really is! It makes a world of difference, at least to me.

Today’s creation renewed my love for monsters. All is right with the world again.

I would like to say that I didn’t waste the ruined monster. I choked it down because I didn’t want to waste the spinach, but it was NOT GOOD! Not good at all.

    LOL! We've choked on our share of green monsters that weren't good. It most often happens when we're trying to add new "powders".

    I added a little chunk of avocado last night and it made it verrry thick and creamy… but also more green tasting. Once I decided to try adding cocoa powder of the unsweetened variety. Blech, what a bad decision!

    For sure. I made them with hemp protein powder last summer and thought it was the most disgusting thing ever.

    I can make them without bananas, but only if I have an orange or maybe a pear available. I have made a few bad ones because I try to toss in all kinds of veggies and sometimes it's just too much

    I'm totally with you about bananas being a necessity! For awhile I was making two at a time for my banana-allergic husband and I, obviously without bananas. Man did they improve when I started making them just for me!!!
