I must admit that I have been reading about Kombucha on blogs for the past year or so but I have never had the courage to pick one up at the store for myself. I know people who live on these bad boys and I know people who absolutely hate it and can’t stand it. I had to make an informed decision for myself, so I picked one up the other day.
It looks innocent enough, right?
And who doesn’t like a name like PassionBerry Bliss?
Here are some Kombucha stats from the bottle:
KOMBUCHA (pronounced kom-BOO-cha) is a handmade Chinese tea that is delicately cultured for 30 days. During this time essential nutrients form like: Active Enzymes, Viable Probiotics, Amino Acids, Antioxidents and Polyphenols. All of these combine to crean an elixer that immediately works with the body to restore balance and vitality.
Kombucha supports: digestion, metabolism, immune sysstem, appetite control, weight control, liver function, body alkalinity, anti-aging, cell integrity, healthy skin and hair.
From those stats, this bad boy looks like healthy living in a bottle! Who doesn’t want all of those things?! Sign me up!
Now for the taste test:
I enjoy the pink color, the appetizing name and the pretty bottle. My only cause for concern was this little guy, floating around in the bottle. Do you see it?
Here’s a better picture. Apparently its a lovely chunk of fungi. Now THAT to me is a little scary and intimidating. While drinking I have been making a very conscious effort NOT to swallow that.
Baby steps my friends, baby steps.
The passionberry flavor has little hints of blackberries and other berry flavoring, but I was told before hand that Kombucha tasted like vinegar, and now that is what I really taste. It’s not a bad taste, just very different. I am enjoying it more the more I drink it.
The best part about this experiment was that my local Whole Foods now has these awesome stickers. Apparently if you have never tried a product or brand before and if you tell a Whole Foods Team member, some participating stores will have these stickers that they plop on whatever product you want and then you get to try your first one for free! How awesome is that?
These Kombucha drinks aren’t cheap! They are around $3.00 a bottle in stores, so its nice to know you can try something out without buying it before you even know if you like it!
Does your Whole Foods run this sticker program?
So there you have it. I faced my kombucha fear and enjoyed a nice drink. There are lots of other flavors out there, so I will probably pick up some others and let you know what I think.
Do you have any favorite Kombucha flavors? Are you a Kombucha fan?

Mystic Mango is awesome!
What Whole Foods did you go to? Does Plymouth Meeting do the sticker program?!
Oh wow. I've never seen those before (except for on blogs), and now I want to try them even more. I didn't know very much about them until now. That fungi in the bottle would have freaked me out!
Hmm I don't think I could handle the fungi floating around either. It would totally freak me out.
the sludge at the bottom freaked me out too. couldnt really handle drinking it. maybe i bought the wrong flaovr but it just didnt sit well with me. glad you liked it thoug.
You are much braver than I. Just the sight of that makes me a little nauseous.
I've only ever tried homemade kombucha (by an ex-coworker). Her's was good though!
I love Kombucha! I make my own at home as well. It grows on you. Its like beer or wine. You have to learn to appreciate the flavors 🙂
I'd like to try it, but I think I would strain it first before I drank it to get the fungi and sludge out of it. If it tastes like vinegar, I don't know if I would like it. You're a brave soul Ms. Leslie! Good for you for trying it! Would fiance drink it?
I almost grabbed one of those the other day, but decided to try Cell-nique instead. I will most definitely try one!
ew…is the fungi suppose to be in there? I don't think I could drink it solely on that! Makes me gag looking at it!
i'd never heard of the sticker program but what an awesome idea!! i'll have to ask at my WF next time i'm there.
i've never heard of that sticker program before! i want to ask! thats my fav flavor kombucha 🙂
My favorite flavor is Gingerberry. I tried Trilogy once and it didn't do it for me. But gingerberry has a nice ginger taste without being too strong.
Is the fungi where the benefits are? I always made myself drink them because that's what I had been told… please tell me I can avoid them in the future :o)
JEALOUS of you being the Fan of the Day over at Larabar. LOVE THEM.
ack! i think those drinks are so icky. it always amazes how big their fan base is.
but i do love that sticker program!
