Loving That Chicago Deep Dish Pizza

Clearly during my short time in Chicago for the Healthy Living Summit I had a few ‘must-do’s’ on a little list. There were a few things that I had to fit in during my visit to Chi-Town.

Ok, my list was really short. I wanted to go see The Bean (aka Cloud Gate) and I wanted to eat some awesome deep dish pizza!

HLS 247

A few bloggers got into town early and already assessed the pizza situation so I had an idea of where I wanted to go.

HLS 243HLS 246

We decided to hit up Gino’s East, which came highly recommended as an amazing place to go for classic Chicago deep dish!

HLS 244

I liked to assume the place was a hit because when we got there Saturday night the line was super long!

HLS 245

The good thing was we were able to get beers from the bar inside and drink them while we waited!

I got the local Goose Island Summer Brew, and it was delish!

HLS 265

Drinking beers in line sure made time fly!

Cheers!

HLS 264

After a little bit of a wait outside we finally made it to the front of the line and we were ready to eat!

     HLS 252

I was surprised to find that the inside of the restaurant had graffiti on all the walls, chairs, stairs…pretty much EVERYWHERE.

HLS 249    HLS 253

It was pretty cool decor if you ask me.

HLS 262HLS 276HLS 277

After we were seated I decided to get comfortable in my seat. I was told earlier in the evening that when you order a deep dish it takes an additional 45-55 minutes to get your dinner! Wow!

HLS 285

Beck, Lindsay, Jen and I decided on trying a Large pizza split in half with two separate pizza toppings on each side.

We went with half a Spinach and half a Four Cheese because we were intrigued by the garlic butter base. How can that not be awesome!?

HLS 268

While we waited I took in the scenery and enjoyed talking with my new blog friends.

HLS 289     HLS 288

I even ventured around the restaurant and found a La Croix in a glass bottle! I have never seen this before, have you??

  HLS 291

After waiting for a bit our pizza finally appeared!

HLS 296

I was a little nervous at first because I am not the biggest fan of tomatoes, but I decided to be adventurous and just go for it, and I am SO glad I did!

HLS 297

This thing might possibly be the best thing I have ever eaten. It was amazing. The spinach was incredible and the pizza was so cheesy but at the same time so light.

HLS 298

OMG! My favorite part was the crust. It was TO. DIE. FOR!

HLS 299

After slice #1 it was time to go back for the Four Cheese slice, which was just as good as the first. I was in pizza heaven.

The best part about this pizza was that even though the pizza slices were big, we each had 2 pieces and we weren’t stuffed. We were happily and comfortably full. Not overly full. It was the perfect amount of food!

  HLS 302

I had so much fun hanging out with these ladies! The pizza was just the perfect ending to a fun filled day with new friends!

 HLS 310

And we ate every last bite!

HLS 304

Have you ever had Chicago Deep Dish pizza? Where is your favorite pizza spot?

16 miles on Lake Michigan

This past weekend at the Healthy Living Summit I did something I knew I needed to do, but wasn’t planning on doing, but I am so glad I did it!

I bet you can guess what I did from the title of this post!

You guessed right, I ran farther than I have ever ran before – 16 miles on beautiful Lake Michigan.

HLS 326

After doing a mini run (is it weird to call 6 miles a mini run??) on the Lake on Friday morning with some bloggy friends, I soon learned that there was a handful of other runners who had 16 miles on their plate for the week.

HLS 327

I must admit I had planned on doing this long run before I even left for Chicago but then I ran out of time. Then I planned on doing it on Monday when I got back, but it would have been another lonely run by myself in the heat!

HLS 328

When I heard chat about running 16 with a group I knew I was going to partake in the run. Any chance I get to run with a group or with another person I am all about it.

I feel running with others, especially runners who are faster than you, can only make you a better runner too!

HLS 330

The sad part was I was unprepared. I didn’t pack my Garmin, my CamelBak, I didn’t even have a real sports bra, just some yoga tops with built in bra’s, so I was hoping I could get through this run with the help of my new blog friends!

HLS 331

I started to think of the run as just an 8 mile run out and then a separate 8 mile run back. We wanted to stick to the Lake path because it was easily accessible to our hotel and we didn’t want to chance getting lost.

HLS 332

I had so much fun running with Meghann and the other bloggers. We chatted it up the entire way and before we knew it the first half of our running journey was done and it was time to head back to complete the final 8 miles, which didn’t sound so bad to me anymore!

HLS 333

The running path was full of beautiful views of Chicago and its surrounding areas. It was clean and I think it was even a little cooler for us just because we were next to the lake running along the water.

HLS 334

Gorgeous scenery, right?

HLS 335

We even passed a few beaches. I wanted to jump in!

HLS 336

It was such fun passing all the mile markers and feeling myself getting closer and closer to a new PDR (personal distance record)

HLS 337HLS 338

It was great to run with this amazing group. A few of us were new to marathon training so we were chatting it up with those who have a few under their belts. It was so awesome to be talking about our upcoming races while completing a longer training run.

Evan just came along and ran 16 miles for the fun of it! He’s a machine!

 HLS 340

It was a PDR for Theodora , Beck and I. We were all excited to be reaching new milestones in our training.

HLS 342  HLS 344

One of the best parts of the trail we were on were all the water fountains. Those who were slightly unprepared (specifically, yours truly) really appreciated the H20!

HLS 346

After our turnaround point it was nice to be running back towards the city, back at that beautiful skyline.

HLS 348

We had a group shot taken about halfway back.

Runners included (from L to R) – Me, Meghann, Emily, Monica, Jenn, Bec, Evan and Theodora

HLS 351

It was so awesome that we were all able to run together for this long distance! I was so proud of everyone!

In terms of the actual distance itself, 16 miles is tough. We started early enough in the morning that it wasn’t too hot for the first half of the run but then the second half the heat was starting to creep up on us, which is never fun!

I was feeling fabulous and having a great time until we hit the half marathon/14 mile marker. At that point I was really starting to feel it in my legs, they were getting tired!

I powered through and had a strong finish and was proud of my accomplishment. I believe we did around 9:30/9:45 minute miles the whole time, not including water break stops, which I think it pretty impressive for a large group that has never run together before!

 HLS 353HLS 354

I was so happy that I used my superhuman powers of persuasion to convince Beck to run with us too! She is a rocking runner (and roommate!)

That last two miles, to get through my pain, I decided to focus on what I wanted to eat when we finished the run. I decided that after a few random cravings (coke/Gatorade), that I really wanted a massive fruit smoothie.

We finished the miles and made our way (aka – slightly limping) to the nearest Jamba Juice. It was the perfect way to complete our morning of reaching new miles!

HLS 355

What’s your favorite snack post running? Do you have a go-to treat that satisfies a craving?

Wag N’ Style

***This post is Jackson heavy due to his birthday today!***

Jackson got a fun piece of mail today in honor of his big birthday!

jacksons 4 062

My parents sent Jackson a cute little SpongeBob card!

He obviously loved the card. Jackson just got back from spending 10 days in Virginia with my parents 2 weeks ago while Fiancé and I were away, so they were definitely missing him!

jacksons 4 073 jacksons 4 074

In honor of Jackson’s birthday I promised him a long walk and a trip to a new (to me) puppy store near our apartment.

jacksons 4 022

Wag N’ Style has been around for a  year but this was my first trip in. It was really cute and had lots of fun little treats. The owner of the store had pictures up of his dog everywhere, I thought she kind of looked a little bit like Jackson too!

jacksons 4 001jacksons 4 002

I want to own a store where I can spray paint a picture of Jackson and his name on the wall! How cool would that be?

 jacksons 4 004

Wag N’ Style had lots of cute things. I am sort of obsessed with these glass bowls. They were displayed as dog bowls, but I kind of want to get one for myself and eat oatmeal out of it, or put something pretty in it! They are so cute (and locally made!)

jacksons 4 005

Cute puppy clothes too!

jacksons 4 008

I took Jackson around the whole store and let him sniff everything to pick out what he wanted. I held a bunch of stuff in front of him and if he licked it or went to grab it, we got it, its not, we left it!

  jacksons 4 007

He was prince of the store for today!

 jacksons 4 009jacksons 4 012

Have you ever seen Dog and Cat “Wine”? This stuff was silly.

 jacksons 4 013 jacksons 4 014

My Jersey Boys love their Phils.

jacksons 4 015

Jackson was pooped after his long walk. jacksons 4 023   jacksons 4 028jacksons 4 029

We had a fun time walking around the store and picking out some treats for him to enjoy.

jacksons 4 039

Jackson was a good little boy and picked out all natural dog treats today.

jacksons 4 038

He had a hard time deciding which treat he was going to enjoy first. I let him have first pick and now we are saving the rest for later!

  jacksons 4 041jacksons 4 042

Jackson spent the rest of the afternoon crunching his little heart out while I got caught up on emails and did some wedding work!

jacksons 4 046 jacksons 4 047jacksons 4 048

I think he enjoyed his birthday with a little extra attention (like he already doesn’t get enough!)
