Helpful Hints to Start Running

I have not always been a runner.

I have really only recently started considering myself a runner.

I would say that I have always been athletic, I have played soccer since I was a little girl. I played on travel soccer teams and my high school soccer team as well as a team that came in second place in the National competition! My soccer travels took me to lots of places for tournaments all over the United States and even to a exclusive training camp with the Chelsea Football Club in England!

I also trained with John Ellis (Asst. Coach for US Women’s National Team) , Paul Ellis and even Mia Hamm!

Can someone remind me next time I go home to Virginia to post pictures from back in my soccer glory days?? I promise you that you will enjoy pictures of me circa 1998 – 2002!

Aside from soccer I also played basketball in grade school and high school (but I didn’t like to dribble the ball so that was short lived!) and I also played lacrosse in high school and college (I only joined the team because I liked the idea of frolicking around the field in the cute skirts! And as you all know now, I love my running skirts!

While I was involved in all these competitive sports running was always emphasized from my coaches. As I got older I was given weekly ‘homework’ as to runs I was supposed to do to help keep in shape. I can honestly say now that it was something I never took seriously, but at the same time I knew being in better shape would affect my abilities out on the field.

Falling in love with blogging led me to fall in love with running at the same time. I am not sure whether it was just my age or the stage of my life I was in at the time  but something for me just clicked, and I am so glad it did.

Since I have been posting recently about my long runs for my upcoming Chicago Marathon training I have received a few requests from readers about tips for those just starting to get in their running groove. Tomorrow is September (seriously, where did that come from??), which to me means the start of Fall, I figured it was time for a little Fall race season pump up post!

Here are some of my favorite running tips!

************************************************

1- Bite the Bullet and Sign up for  that race! Even if you don’t think you are ready, even if it is a distance you think is out of your reach, signing up for the race will motivate you more than you know!

2- Get your groove on! Good music always make my runs so much better and so much more enjoyable. It’s important to change things up every few weeks and make different playlists for different runs/moods! When it comes to running – Music Matters!

3- Run with a buddy! Anytime I have a chance to run with friends, I jump at it! Running with other people always makes the time fly by.  It’s also a great way to up your pace by running with someone who is faster than you or help pace someone who is trying to improve their speed (which helps your running karma!)

4- Plan ahead! I like to plan my runs out a week (or in terms of Marathon training..Months ahead!) just so I know what to expect from myself workout-wise! It’s nice to know before hand which days I am going to run and which days I have off.

And as always, there is always space for some wiggle room if you need! Wiggle room is important in any training plan because no matter how well you plan ahead, life can sometimes get in the way!

5- Treat yourself to cute running gear!  – When you are running or exercising in something you feel awesome in, you will be more likely to want to throw it on again and again (and enjoy the experience!). Whenever I find I product I love for working out I always treat myself. The feeling of working out is awesome with cute clothes on…let’s be honest! Can you really put a price on that??

6- You are your own worst enemy – Don’t compete with the rest of the runner  out there in the blog world or in real life. I can guarantee it will pretty much drive you crazy!  Compete with yourself and yourself alone. Set some personal goals  for yourself (aim high!) and go from there.

7-  Speed Work Works! Incorporate it into your workout as little or as much as possible. You will see results. Pinky promise!

8- Have Some Support (Not just in your sports bra!) – A big support group through your running trials and tribulations seriously matters. Whether it be friends online through other blogs and/or your loved ones IRL (in real life) – having someone cheering you on can make all the difference in the world!

The post I've been waiting for…great tips, friend!

I'll add one. Deep dish pizza is my favorite pre-long run meal. Jamba Juice is my favorite post-run treat.

Find your running soulmate and run with that person as much as possible.

Any interest in running the Princess Half again next year? Becky and I were talking about running it… Or the Rock and Roll Half in Providence in Augsut 2011.

I just found your blog, I love it! These are great tips! I'm all about buying cute new outfits as an extra incentive to workout and now I have so many I'm passing on stuff I never wear to my friends who still think cotton t shirts are a good idea for running.

I definitely bribe myself with food incentives for certain runs/distances. And marathon days I am allowed to eat whatever the hell I want to eat!

Girl, this is a fantastic post and I hope it inspires others. I had no idea you were a soccer gal, that's pretty bad a**.

I cannot get over your ice baths, I'd prefer cute running gear, haa.

    Great, great tips!

Awesome tips! I totally agree with all of them. I do use ice packs after runs, but I'm too chicken to do a real ice bath. 😛

hey! i just started reading you blog and just this week had my first ever green monster! i had to fight my kids off because they loved it just as much as i did!! =)

my question is about training. i have read several other blog along with yours and you all talk about being "in training". is there a particular resource you prefer for this? i got the c210k app but was wondering if you have found that something else you have/are used that you have found to be better.

thanks for all your tips and just the encouragement you give by blogging. i have run in the past and am getting started again since my youngest of 3 kids is now in preschool. =)

just curious…why do your refer to your fiance as "fiance"?? just wondering.

    thanks!

Great tips and great to hear about the ice bath – I've been pretty intimidated by it!

love these tips! and i love the picture of you jumping at the end. super cute.

my only tip…don't psych yourself out. i think it's really easy to do. i'm good at talking myself out of something. so i think it's important to become your biggest encouragement!
