A Marathon Christmas

Did you have a very Merry Christmas weekend? We sure did over here in And Her Little Dog Too world, but it was one crazy weekend, that’s for sure! The original plans were to spend Christmas Eve in New Jersey with Fiancé’s family and then wake up Christmas morning and spend Saturday and Sunday in Virginia with my family.

We got to spend time with both families, but it didn’t work out as well as we had planned.

Christmas Eve was lovely. Fiancé’s parents hold a big party for their entire family every year so its nice to be able to go there and see everyone. They don’t live too far from us, right over the bridge from Philadelphia to New Jersey in a little town, so its easy for us to get there.

We had heard about threats of snow on Christmas day and were worried that it would affect our travel plans to get down to Virginia. When we woke up bright and early to head down South, the coast was clear, so we hit the road.

When we got down to Virginia, we spent the afternoon with my family – did the whole presents and Christmas dinner thing  which was awesome and then we heard about the update for the threat of snow.

The word on the street was that it was going to get bad.

Real bad.

We were deciding between getting to spend the rest of the holiday and weekend with my parents and potentially spending the entire Sunday in traffic/blizzard conditions trying to get back to Philadelphia or leaving Saturday evening after we had just been there a few hours.

It was a tough call leaving my family when we had just got there to spend the weekend with them but the weatherman was calling for lots of snow starting at 4 am. We decided to pack up and leave Virginia and head home right away to make sure we got there safe and sound.

So we headed from PA to NJ to VA passing through DE and MD and back to PA in about 24 hours! That’s a lot of driving! But it was worth it to spend part of the holiday with both of our families. We are very lucky to be within manageable driving distance of both of them.

We rushed home Christmas night. Fiancé and I were both surprised to spend the last few minutes of the holiday with our Christmas tree, but it was nice to be able to go to bed and not have to drive anywhere (or deal with any snowy conditions on the road) during one of the busiest travel days of the year.

And then we waited for the snow. And waited. And waited.

We woke up expecting to be knee deep in snow. And there was nothing. Nothing until about noon on Sunday – and then the snow started to fall.

I was a little disappointed because Fiancé and I could have stayed until Sunday morning and got home before the snow, but I am sure if we had stayed the snow would have started earlier!

According to the weatherman, we got about 10 inches of snow here in Philly!

That’s a good amount of snow for our first big storm of the season. It’s also a lot of snow for a 11 pound puppy.

I took Jackson outside this morning and he was not a fan of the white stuff.

He wasn’t able to move around much in it without hopping through it.

Shake it off buddy.

So we mainly stuck to the paved areas.

The ‘white Christmas’ was a little late and slightly screwed up our plans, but it is still nice to see some snow on the ground the last week of December! It makes everything a little extra festive, don’t you think?

All in all it was a fabulous Christmas. Santa was fabulous to Fiancé, Jackson and I – all 3 of us got some awesome gifts from St. Nick as well as from our families. It was wonderful to spend the weekend with the ones we love.

How did the snow affect your Christmas?

Glad you made it home safe, although it's sad you had to leave your family early! I am out in VA (Newport News) visiting my family – we got about a foot of snow yesterday! I'm supposed to fly back home tomorrow, we will see how that goes..!

My sister and I drove from Ohio to New Jersey last week, and due to reports of snow we woke up extra early to do so. It didn't affect us too much though since we wanted to hit the road early…10-12 hours is a long drive! Glad you guys stayed safe!

Our family had a fabulous Christmas in spite of the Weatherman. As the old adage goes, "Things never work out the way you expect them to".
Glad you, fiance and Jackson made it home safe and sound, and that little boy sure doesn't like all that snow, does he?

It is better that you made it home before the snow… nothing worse then having to drive in it. Here in Ottawa, Ontario ( where it snows a lot), we had nothing over Christmas, not even enough snow on the trails to go snowshoeing.
