How to Stay Healthy While Traveling

Hey, And Her Little Dog Too readers! Anne here from the food and fitness blog fANNEtastic food :) I’m a runner, (whole) foodie, occasional yogi, and lover of healthy recipe creation who, after years of cubicle work, recently started from scratch and went back to school to become a Registered Dietitian (RD)! I actually just finished my first year of grad school and will be doing my first dietetic internship this summer – so far so good :)


So, first things first – a BIG congratulations to the newlyweds! I hope they are having a blast on their honeymoon :) Since they are off traveling, and the busy summer travel season is nearly upon us, I thought I would share some of my favorite tips for staying healthy while traveling.


How to Stay Healthy While Traveling:


  • Bring a reusable water bottle and drink LOTS of water. My water bottle comes with me everywhere! If flying, bring it through security empty and fill it up on the other side.


  • Walking and running are the best ways to see new cities and get a great workout in at the same time. More wiggle room for delicious food, right? :)
  • I also love renting a bike in a new city to explore!



  • If you’re driving, pack food for the day you’re driving. If you’re on a longer trip, hit a grocery store for breakfast and lunch food.
  • Pack lots of snacks so you can stay healthy in between meals. Here are some of my favorite packables:

I also like to pick one “splurge” meal for the day – I usually stick with healthier food for breakfast and lunch (and snacks, unless there is gelato or ice cream to be eaten, heh), and indulge a bit more at dinner when traveling.


  • Use the hotel gym, if there is one.
  • Bring resistance bands, a jump rope, printable workout moves, or exercise DVDs (check out this post I wrote for more details on getting a great workout while traveling)
  • Always take the stairs.


And lastly: don’t worry too much, you are on vacation! Just stay active and enjoy the trip! :)
