Smitten Kitchen’s Homemade Tomato Sauce

I’m so domestic, it hurts. It seriously hurts.

I never in my wildest dreams thought I would ever be the kind of person to make tomato sauce. It sounded hard and complicated – but I came across this recipe from Smitten Kitchen the other day and it sounded pretty foolproof – so I decided to give it a go!

My latest culinary adventure revolves around 3 simple ingredients – a 28 oz. can of whole peeled tomatoes, one yellow onion and 5 tablespoons of unsalted butter.

Sounds easy right? Well, let me just tell you – IT WAS!

And the best part is the easy preparation. The only slicing and dicing required was to take this yellow onion:

And slice it in half.

I also had to open the can of tomatoes, but I hardly count that as cooking!

Add the butter and halved onion into a pot.

And then top it with the tomatoes.

Then you put the lid on your fancy shmancy new All Clad saucepan – a gift from my Uncle at our Engagement Party!

And you let the heat take over the sauce! Bring everything to a simmer and then leave the heat on low for about 45 minutes.

Your sauce will start to bubble and look like this:

It will also make your kitchen smell amazing.

Jackson was intrigued by the amazing smell so he came to help me in the kitchen.

I think the little guy wanted some sauce!

After about 45 minutes on the stove, my sauce started to look like sauce!

I was like a proud mom stirring this sauce!

While the sauce continued to simmer I made some pasta – I went with Bucatini – I had never tried it before but it looked pretty so I went with it for my first homemade sauce attempt.

The thick strands have a hollow core.

The sauce became ready at the same time as the pasta – it was a match made in heaven!

The Smitten Kitchen recipe involved taking out the entire onion, but mine broke up a bit in the sauce so I took out some of the bigger pieces and left the rest in. I don’t think the extra bits of onion in the sauce affected the taste in any way – I actually liked the flavor.

I added a few meatballs to the mix and we had ourselves a lovely little meal.

The sauce was out of this world. So tasty and delicious. I loved every bite.

I think I loved it even more because I made it! I am so proud of my sauce!

    Mmm…this looks good.

    The closest I’ve gotten to making my own sauce was for ratatouille.

    I stewed fresh tomatoes, garlic, olive oil, salt, pepper, and fresh basil separate and then added the vegetables. I think it would have been just a good with just the sauce!

    Do you make your meatballs too? I love making my own with ground turkey: super healthy and super tasty!
