Garden Cafe – Italia – Inside the National Gallery of Art

Our few days of fun with Destination DC started with a little walk to see some of the sights.

DSC_0014.JPG

Some of the main attractions included the Washington Monument & the Capitol.

DSC_0015.JPG

But this trip is focused on food, right?

DSC_0016.JPG

So inside the National Gallery of Art we headed towards our first eating experience.

DSC_0018.JPG

We started off our eating adventure at the Garden Cafe inside the museum.

DSC_0022.JPG

I was immediately surprised by this eating experience – the museum fine dining was a real treat.

DSC_0023.JPG

The menu changes seasonally here based on what is being featured in the museum. A this time, there is a focus on Italian pieces in the Gallery so the menu was created to highlight an Italian culinary experience.

DSC_0027.JPG

Pretty fancy and a great idea if you ask me!

DSC_0026.JPG

We opted for the featured buffet which at $19.75 per person is a great deal for the food you are treated too.

DSC_0030.JPG

The buffet included a selection of Italian breads, a watermelon salad with Pecorino Romano cheese and white balsamic dressing,

DSC_0032.JPG

marinated castelvetrano olives, baked eggplant with tomato, Parmigiano & mozzarella,

DSC_0033.JPG

long hollow pasta with pancetta and parmigiano along with chicken with rosemary, garlic & tomato sauce

DSC_0035.JPG

along with gourmet Italian cured meats and cheese

DSC_0037.JPG

some orange marmalade, fig jam & honey for good measure

DSC_0040.JPG

and, finally Lattarolo – which is vanilla & honey custard to complete the meal.

DSC_0031.JPG

I had a little bit of everything and it was absolutely fantastic. I loved every bite!

DSC_0043.JPG

We were even treated to recipe cards for the dishes at the buffet – I can’t wait to recreate the baked eggplant at home!

DSC_0044.JPG

After indulging ourselves in an incredible Italian lunch we headed upstairs to experience the only Da Vinci piece in North or South America.

DSC_0045.JPG

Pretty cool to see in real life.

DSC_0046.JPG

DSC_0047.JPG

This painting was double sided which was also neat to see!

This is just the beginning of our culinary travels in DC! Stay tuned for more eating!

Destination DC

Greetings from Washington DC!

I am excited to announce that I am currently taking part in a 3 day food-focused exploration of the city sponsored by both Foodbuzz and Destination DC.

Destination DC is the official tourism and marketing office of Washington, DC and they are currently hosting myself, Tina & Gina – showing us the best of what DC has to offer! We have been visiting museums, eating at top restaurants and meeting tons of awesome people!

Yesterday was only Day 1 and I took 200 pictures, so needless to say I have lots to share, but here are a few pictures from our day in DC to give you a little sneak peak of all the fun we have been having!

The view from my room:

photo-206.JPG

Men repairing the Washington Monument after the recent earthquakes caused cracks in foundation – see the teeny tiny men repelling from the top? I would love to know how much they make for doing that!

Sadly, the Washington Monument is closed indefinitely, and even MORE sadly, I have never been up to the top of that bad boy. Partly because I am deathly afraid of heights and partly because I haven’t had the chance. I hope it opens up again and that I get to go up there!

photo-199.JPG

The rest of the day consisted of seeing the sights, eating, drinking and eating again (and again!) – trust me when I tell you we are being VERY well fed on this trip!

Home Sweet Home

Tonight I am spending the night at home with my family in Virginia.

Home is where the heart is – and I haven’t seen my family since July 4th weekend, so it was lovely to be able to come down today and spend some time with my mom, dad and brother!

photo-198.JPG

Jackson and I made the trek down from PA to VA this afternoon.

I drove, he slept. Pretty standard.

I will be spending the rest of the week down in DC for a fun blogger media event !

Trio Thai – a pan-asian BYOB

Last night, Charles and I took that advice of some of my twitter friends and hit up a new (to us) Thai restaurant in the Fairmount area of Philadelphia – Trio!

DSC_0731.JPG

DSC_0733.jpg

It was pouring down rain last night and Trio was pretty easy to park at, which is important to us when dining out in Philadelphia, but I was very excited to try a new restaurant. I love me some Thai food so I was excited when Trio came so highly recommended. Plus its a BYO which is always fun!

DSC_0735.JPG

   DSC_0743.JPG

It has been a crazy week for both Charles and I – normally on a Friday night of a crazy week we will stay in and chill out but it was really nice last night to go out! Sometimes enjoying a night out with a bottle of wine is just what the doctor ordered to relax and unwind!

DSC_0739.JPG

For dinner I got what I always get when I go out for Thai food – Pad Thai! I enjoyed this dish with shrimp, which was delicious! When asked, on a scale of 1-5, how hot I would like this dish, I went with a 3 – this dish seriously brought the heat! Luckily, I enjoy the spice, but it was very h-o-t!

DSC_0752.JPG

Charles ordered the Green Curry but was brought this dish instead. Neither of us notched he was brought the wrong dish until he was halfway through eating it (even though there is a pretty big difference between what he ordered and what he got) when our waiter came over and told us that Charles was eating Drunken Noodles with Chicken, not Green Curry. The waiter offered to bring Charles the curry dish he originally ordered, but Charles enjoyed the noodles so much he didn’t need to switch – pretty nice that he got to try something he wouldn’t normally order and learned he really enjoyed it!

DSC_0748.JPG

My plate was so massive I only ate about half of it – took the rest home for leftovers! Yum! The waiter was also really sweet and took Charles’ meal off the check since he didn’t get what he actually ordered so it was a really cheap night out! I love good customer service like that, it was completely unnecessary and unexpected, since Charles really did enjoy the dish he was served, but it was a nice surprise.

DSC_0760.JPG

We will definitely be back to Trio! The food was really tasty, the service was awesome and you get to bring your own wine! What’s not to love about that?

DSC_0762.JPG

Have you ever received the wrong order when dining out but been pleasantly surprised?

DSC_0767.JPG

And the winner of my Dinner @ 6 Giveaway is Lauren Westgate who’s favorite 6 ingredient (or less) recipe is avocado salsa! Yum! Lauren – email me your information and we will get your $100 AMEX gift card out to you!

Thanks so much to everyone who entered! Stay tuned for another amazing giveaway on Monday! It might just be one of the best giveaways I have done to date, so stay tuned! it’s a good one!

Friday Favorites: Get Your Grain On!

Hello, Happy Friday and Congratulations to Sabrina who gave birth to her little Bambino early this morning! I can’t wait to meet the little guy!

I wanted to remind everyone that National Whole Grain Month is coming to an end – can you believe that it is almost October? Where does the time go?

But back to the grains! Don’t forget to visit the Whole Grains Council website and share your favorite whole grain products to enter to win two great prizes- $5000 of grocery money and a year’s worth of Quaker whole grain products OR an iPad 2 loaded with food and health apps! Some great prizes are on the line!

*********************************************

In honor of the glorious grains, I wanted to highlight some of my favorites along with some pretty amazing health benefits you might not know about!

First up is CORN: Fresh corn on the cob. Popcorn. Corn cakes. Polenta. Tortillas. Corn muffins. I honestly didn’t know that corn was a whole grain! Fun fact about corn is that it has the highest level of antioxidants of any grain or vegetable – almost twice the antioxidant activity of apples!

201109222035.jpg

Next up is Oats! Oats have a special kind of fiber in them which is found to be very effective at lowering cholesterol. Oats also have a unique antioxidant which protect blood vessels.

201109222040.jpg

Quinoa is another favorite whole grain of mine. Not only is it very tasty, but it is a complete protein, which means it contains all the essential amino acids our bodies can’t make on their own.

201109222043.jpg

And finally, did you know rice is one of the most easily digestible grains? It is ideal for those on a restricted diet or are gluten intolerant. Nice little fun fact there if you ask me!

201109222047.jpg

So there you have it – just a few little fun facts about grains. For more information on just how awesome grains are, check out the Whole Grains Council website!

Do you have any favorite fun facts about grains? Please share!

A while back I got a Groupon deal for PB & U in Wayne, Pennsylvania. I bought it what seems like forever ago and nearly forgot about it until this past week when I realized it was expiring soon so I had to get my little booty out there to get my peanut butter on!

photo-185.JPG

PB & U offers a unique spin on the classic peanut butter & jelly sandwich.

photo-183.jpg

The menu gives a variety of peanut butter, bread and lots of mix in’s and toppings! This I would have never thought to add to a peanut butter sandwich!

photo-184.jpg

I went there with Charles so he could experience the peanut butter fun as well – we were excited to try something new.

photo-196.jpg

Charles & I decided to split two sandwiches – something savory & something sweet!

photo-194.jpgphoto-193.jpg

First we got a peanut butter, bacon, cheddar & a pickle. The word on the street was that this bad boy tasted like a cheeseburger – and it really did!

photo-195.jpg

For “dessert” we got the peanut butter, nutella, fluff & m&m’s. This was super rich and delicious! Perfect for my sweet tooth!

photo-192.jpg

The sandwiches might seem a little crazy, but I am up for anything and love to try new things!

photo-188.jpg

This was really fun to stop and have lunch at – it was something completely different! It was very kid friendly – packed with kids running around enjoying their PB sandwiches! To me this seems like a much better options for kids than fast food!

photo-191.jpg

photo-189.jpgphoto-187.jpg

What do you think of PB & U – and its concept? Do you have any restaurant like this where you like?

photo-186.jpg

What is your all time favorite peanut butter sandwich creation?
