Aside from eating my way through DC one of the highlights of the trip I was really excited about was our trip to the FreshFarm Market!
These markets focus on promoting local food throughout the Chesapeake Bay region. These markets are located all around DC, Maryland and Virginia – the one our group stopped by was located between H & I Street NW on Vermont Avenue one block away from the White House.
The FreshFarm markets highlight regional farmers or growers who see what the grow, raise or produce on their farm. The resale of agricultural products by farmers/growers is not per missed. To sell at these markets the vendors must be within a 150 mile radius or 3 hour drive of DC. I think it’s pretty amazing that they have such high standards to keep the market very focused on supporting the local farmers/growers in the area.
It was lovely to stroll through the market, meet lots of different vendors and check out what everyone had to offer.
I love taking pictures at Farmer’s Markets so I got a little camera happy here.
We were even treated to some fresh eats throughout the market by some awesome vendors.
I can’t wait to try out this Hot Pepper Jelly from Bigg Riggs Farm.
On our tour of the market I also found my new favorite type of apple – the Crispin
Seriously, best apple ever!
Other highlights of the market include gorgeous flowers
Incredible sheep’s milk cheese.
And gorgeous feathers!
My favorite part of the market was getting to try out all the amazing cheeses!
We each got to pick out our favorite cheese to take home – I went with the Dragon’s Breath from Keswick Creamery which is a new take on hot pepper jack cheese. I LOVED it!
Can’t wait to bust this out at home!
Our final treat we got to take home was lamb bacon from Garden Path Farm. I know Charles can’t wait to try this!
The FreshFarm Markets have everything! You can go and get your grocery shopping done (with amazing prices and FRESH produce) or you can stop by to grab a bite to eat on the go!
My favorite part of shopping at a Farmer’s Market is knowing exactly where your food came from and how fresh it really is.
What is the best thing you have ever purchased at a Farmer’s Market?
To all my DC/Maryland/Virginia readers – Check out FreshFarm Market’s website to see where their markets are located! If you go check it out you are in for a treat!
And a big thank you to Ann, the Co-Executive Director of the markets for the fantastic tour! 🙂

I LOVE the farmer’s market. We have several in town and I need to make going to them more of a regular event. You can practically do all of your shopping there.
Great pictures! However, I don’t think I would eat a shrimp or tilapia empanada. 🙂
I blogged about a great farmer’s market today too! That cheese looks awesome, and crabs for $1, wow! I’m jealous that you got to try sheep’s cheese and lamb bacon, both things I’ve never had but sound like good variations of two of my fave things, goat cheese and bacon!
I wish our Farmer’s Market was like that! 🙁 Those photos make me sooo jealous! lol
Amazing, just amazing! I love all those pretty flowers and the cheese selection. I love the idea that local farmers are supported – great find!
This could possibly be one of the best farmer’s markets I’ve ever seen! You took so beautiful pictures – love all the colors! Oh, and Crispin apples are THE BEST! 🙂
