What I Learned in BreastFeeding Class

A few weeks ago Charles & I attended a Breastfeeding Class at Pennsylvania Hospital. It was recommended to me as something to do by my friends and OB. When we went I was at the point in my pregnancy where everything was getting really real {really quick} and I just want to soak up all the knowledge I could before Baby Brinkley made his arrival.

Little did I know he would take a while to make his appearance!

While I am already planing on breastfeeding, it’s sort of one of those things where you can read up about it and take a class on it but until you are in the position to actually DO IT, you don’t really know what to expect or what it will really be like. I wanted to take this class just to learn as much as I can about the process {from a breastfeeding specialist} and start to feel a little more comfortable with the process of feeding the baby.

Here are a few of the highlights from my class:

Benefits for Baby –

  • Breastfeeding provides the ideal nutrition for infants – It has the perfect mix of vitamins, protein, and fat — everything baby needs to grow in an easily digestible form.
  • Your “first milk” ->Colostrum helps a newborn’s digestive tract develop and prepare itself to digest breast milk
  • Breast milk contains antibodies that helps baby fight off viruses and bacteria.
  • Reduces your baby’s risk of having asthma or allergies.
  • Babies who are breastfed exclusively for the first six months, without any formula, have fewer ear infections, respiratory illnesses, and bouts of diarrhea.
  • Breastfeeding has been linked to higher IQ scores in later childhood in some studies.
  • The physical closeness, skin-to-skin touching, and eye contact all help your baby bond with you and feel secure.
  • Breastfed infants are more likely to gain the right amount of weight as they grow rather than become overweight children.
  • The AAP says breastfeeding plays a role in the prevention of SIDS (sudden infant death syndrome).
  • It’s also been thought to lower the risk of diabetes, obesity, and certain cancers as well but more research is needed to confirm these findings.

Benefits for Mom – 

  • Breastfeeding burns extra calories, so it can help you lose pregnancy weight faster.
  • It releases the hormone oxytocin, which helps your uterus return to its pre-pregnancy size and may reduce uterine bleeding after birth.
  • Breastfeeding lowers your risk of breast and ovarian cancer. It may also lower your risk of osteoporosis.
  • Since you don’t have to buy and measure formula, sterilize nipples, or warm bottles, breastfeeding saves you time and money.

BreastFeeding Class

I know many facts can be argued about bottle-feeding and/or against breastfeeding, but this being a class for breastfeeding specifically, it was mainly what we focused on because it was what we all came to learn about! In this class we also went over the differences between breastfeeding and bottle-feeding, the importance of Colostrum, milk production, the gear {aka – what you need while in the hospital and at home}, how to breastfeeding {feeding cues, good technique, frequency}, how to tell if your baby is getting enough and more!

Did You Know: The American Academy of Pediatrics {AAP} recommends – Exclusive breastfeeding for approximately the first six months and support for the first year and beyond  as long as mutually desired by mother and child.

    I am close to a year of breastfeeding and one thing that helped me a lot was that my baby likes to switch back and forth between a pacifier and the boob. Like, she kind of takes breaks from eating with the paci in, then I’ll take the paci out and she’ll latch back on and drink more. Kind of hard to explain, but if you baby takes a pacifier, you may want to try that. Also, in the beginning the My Breast Friend pillow was perfect for lining her up to the right spot. Gradually I switched to the Boppy pillow, and then eventually didn’t need a pillow at all once she was bigger. Also, I have been lucky to never get thrush and I think it’s because I have always used disposable breast pads and switched them out any time one got wet with milk. You have to be careful not to let your boobs sit in warm wetness or it’s a perfect breeding ground for thrush. Good luck! I know breastfeeding can be really tough for people, so I wish you the same great experience I have had!

    Be as patient as you can with yourself! I found setting length of time goals for bf worked really well for me. With both kids, getting through the first week of bf, then one month, 6 wks, 3 mos, 6 mos etc up to 12 mos for both. Best wishes!

    I stopped breast feeding in November when my son was 19 months. I had great support from a Facebook breast feeding group- if you’d like to join, let me know!

    Tips:

    drink lots of water, eat lots of oats (old fashioned, not instant or quick).

    Don’t worry, you are probably producing enough. Baby’s tummy is tiny.

    Cluster feeding. It will happen. You will get through it.

    Nipple shields help if baby had a bad or painful latch.

    After feeding, run some breastmilk over your nips and let dry. Helps!

    I think its awesome that you want to breast feed, something that I didn’t feel comfortable with. You can do it!
