My First Oil Pulling Experience

oil pulling

So today I jumped on the bandwagon and tried oil pulling. I actually purchased the coconut oil a week ago but it’s taken me that long to actually try it out for the first time {#newmomproblems} I think I was a little apprehensive to try it out because I didn’t want to put the oil in my mouth and have Brooks start screaming – I wasn’t sure how long I would last with it or if the oil would make me gag, but I read the best time to do it was in the morning and today I saw my opportunity & took it!

I have to say, it wasn’t bad at all.

I only lasted about 10 minutes because Brooks woke up & needed to be held – I didn’t want to be rocking him and accidentally swallow it, so I spit it out {into a bag – don’t put it down the sink, it could clog your pipes!}

I used coconut oil and it smelled like the beach, but you can also use olive oil or sesame oils too! To make the experience slightly more pleasant this morning, I took out 1 teaspoon and put it into a bowl with another bowl full of hot water underneath it to melt the oil a bit, then put it back into a spoon to take. It made everything much easier, I think!

I’m not sure what to believe about all the crazy benefits that oil pulling is said to provide for one’s mouth and overall health, but I wanted to try it out for myself and see. I’m going to try to oil pull {at least} once a day for the next month and see what sort of results I get – I’m most excited about the potential for whiter teeth & clearer sinuses!

  1. I’ve been doing it off and on for like two weeks now…it’s hard to find time, especially in the morning! So, I don’t do it right away…oops. I don’t see any differences at all yet…I sort of like it…can’t decide!

  2. I want to try this, but I’m SO weird with textures and I’m pretty sure I’m going to hate it like a lot.

    I’ve read a lot of people do it while taking there shower, which most people take a 10-15 min shower so you only have a few more mins to go once you get out. I tried it once last week and I liked how my teeth felt after, I also use coconut oil on my skin and hair. I swim 3 days a week and it really helps with the dryness its also great for babies skin!

    I’ve been trying to figure out if this is all that it’s cracked up to be! Let me know if you see any differences? This article is making me lean towards not trying it… http://news.discovery.com/human/psychology/can-oil-pulling-improve-your-health-140311.htm

    • Shannon – The only thing I’m noticing so far is slightly whiter teeth…interesting article though, thanks for sharing!
      I’m still going to keep doing it to see if there are any other long term differences. The whiter teeth alone makes me happy! :)
