Thursday night I had the pleasure of getting to go see my first Opera. I won tickets from Fabulously Broke a few weeks ago to see Hansel and Gretel the Opera at the Met and I was BEYOND excited when I found out I had won. This was what ended up saving my Christmas tradition with Aileen!
The Met was beautifully lit up on that Thursday evening. I was so excited that I was going to see one of my favorite childhood stories come to life on stage.
I remember as a child I had a VHS tape of the Hansel and Gretel story, maybe it was a Disney version?, but I watched it constantly. Its a good story – two adventurous siblings, a crazy witch and lots of sweets ! A little something for everyone!
Aileen and I had never seen an opera before and neither of us had ever set foot in the Met before either, so this was a real treat! Lots of people were there on Thursday evening to see the show.
First off, the Met is seriously beautiful. It’s massive inside, but the seats are spacious and its just a great atmosphere. Also, our seats were seriously badass. We were in the Orchestra section, about 7-8 rows from the front. It was awesome.
I snuck taking a few pictures of the surroundings before I was yelled at to turn off the camera. I told the usher it was for my blog, but he didn’t seem to care. Anywho, isn’t the ceiling pretty? The chandelier lights were hanging down low, but they got pulled up into the ceiling when the show was about to start. So pretty!
My favorite part of the play was when the children entered the witches house and they were served all of this food by these crazy little chefs with massive heads. I loved it!
I obviously didn’t get to take any pictures during the performance for fear of getting us kicked out of the show, but I did sneak in a few when everyone was taking their final bow.
The gingerbread children were amazing. If they had a CD, I would buy it right now. Their voices were so amazing when they sang the final number after they were freed from the witch. I loved it.
The witch was played by Philip Langridge who is in the picture below in the grey skirt and the black top. He was amazing. Hansel was also played by a woman. I think its truly amazing when actors portray a member of the opposite sex. They both had a great performance.
I am so excited and thankful that I got to go see the show. A big thank you goes out to Fabulously Broke for hosting the giveaway and another thank you goes out to Aileen for coming with me to the show!
