Hydrating Eats

Holy Heat it’s HOT outside! It has been super hot in Philly the past few days and apparently the rest of the week its only going to get hotter. Not much fun for any of the outdoor runs I have planned but that is another story for a different day. Today i wanted to share with you some fun hydration tips I recently came across from this month’s Runner’s World that you might enjoy.

Being that it is stifling outside, I figured its important for us all to keep hydrated – here are some of the most hydrating foods you can enjoy during these hot summer months!

Did you know that a watermelon is just as hydrating as water? Watermelons are 92% water, 8% sugar and also contain calcium, magnesium, postassioum and sodium which aid in rehydration.

Watermelon’s and kiwi’s also maintain cartilage and joint flexibility and the Vitamin C in both these fruits gives the body protection from UV rays

A 3 oz. cucumber is like drinking 3 oz. of water but better for you! It has a 96% water content and mineral balance it produces similar hydration levels to twice the volume of water!

Strawberries, peaches and cantaloupe are fruits that are mostly water and potassium – which helps maintain fluid levels in the body. 1 cup of each = 10% of your body’s daily serving.

Pineapples and cherries help you recover and rehydrate after any good sweat session. They reduce inflammation and speed muscle repair.

Two or three mineral-rich celery sticks can replenish levels of sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium, phosphorus, iron and zinc. These salts help carry the 96 per cent water in which they are dissolved around the body.

One cup of cooked beans (kidney, pinto, garbanzo) provides half a cup of water as much protein as two eggs and half your daily fiber needs

Here are some other posts that show you how I enjoy these hydrating foods:
