Hello, Happy Friday and Congratulations to Sabrina who gave birth to her little Bambino early this morning! I can’t wait to meet the little guy!
I wanted to remind everyone that National Whole Grain Month is coming to an end – can you believe that it is almost October? Where does the time go?
But back to the grains! Don’t forget to visit the Whole Grains Council website and share your favorite whole grain products to enter to win two great prizes- $5000 of grocery money and a year’s worth of Quaker whole grain products OR an iPad 2 loaded with food and health apps! Some great prizes are on the line!
In honor of the glorious grains, I wanted to highlight some of my favorites along with some pretty amazing health benefits you might not know about!
First up is CORN: Fresh corn on the cob. Popcorn. Corn cakes. Polenta. Tortillas. Corn muffins. I honestly didn’t know that corn was a whole grain! Fun fact about corn is that it has the highest level of antioxidants of any grain or vegetable – almost twice the antioxidant activity of apples!
Next up is Oats! Oats have a special kind of fiber in them which is found to be very effective at lowering cholesterol. Oats also have a unique antioxidant which protect blood vessels.
Quinoa is another favorite whole grain of mine. Not only is it very tasty, but it is a complete protein, which means it contains all the essential amino acids our bodies can’t make on their own.
And finally, did you know rice is one of the most easily digestible grains? It is ideal for those on a restricted diet or are gluten intolerant. Nice little fun fact there if you ask me!
So there you have it – just a few little fun facts about grains. For more information on just how awesome grains are, check out the Whole Grains Council website!
Do you have any favorite fun facts about grains? Please share!
I was one of three bloggers selected by Quaker Oats to promote the Whole Grain Stampede during the month of September. I have been compensated for my contributions to the campaign; however, my opinions are entirely my own.
