A Marathon of Cheering

Today I DID NOT run the Philadelphia Marathon.

But I DID a Marathon of Cheering at the lululemon Cheer Station!

I made my decision to not run today because my body wasn’t feeling up to the 26.2 and my mind wasn’t excited for the Philadelphia Marathon course.

I run up and down Kelly Drive in Philadelphia constantly. To run up Kelly Drive all the way to Manayunk and then turn around and come back down it on the same exact route, on the opposite side of the street, the last 13 miles of a marathon, it just didn’t excite me.

I dreaded it in fact.

What did excite me was supporting all the marathon runners at the cheer station with my friends and co-workers.

Jackson came with me to support the runners as well.

He was not feeling the loud music or the cowbells so he made an early exit, but he did make a few friends while he was there.

I was so excited when I got to see my running buddy Lauren out on the course. She just ran the Marine Corps Marathon with me 3 weeks ago and killed it today in the Philly Marathon. She did the whole running back to back marathon thing that I did last year with NYC & Chicago marathons!

The rest of my morning was filled with supporting the runners…

Shaking my booty to awesome tunes….

And getting my cowbells on!

I had a blast being on the OTHER SIDE of the Marathon.

I cheered my little heart out for over 4 hours – it was tough work!

I also got to meet up with Aileen who ran the 1/2 this morning and joined me at the Cheer Station mid way through!

Aileen set a new 1/2 marathon PR after just running the NYC marathon 3 weeks ago. She’s amazing!

This morning was awesome.

I made the right decision for me and my body and I had a blast supporting the runners. I posted yesterday my bib on the blog as a little fake out because I did go and get my tshirt/bib from the expo since I paid so much for it! I figured I could always use another technical race shirt!

Thank you so much for your amazing comments on helping me decide if I should run or not today, and for your support during my marathon training the past few months. You are amazing!

I found your blog from the Philly Marathon Facebook page. Your group was THE BEST cheer group along the entire course!!! Both times the signs has me laughing, the energy was insane, and the DJ was rocking’ it! THANKS for doing that and for being at just the right spot on the course. 🙂

I love cheering on runners! If they offered paid positions as perm. cheer person I would put in the application for that job so quick! lol I’m sure all the runners loved running past your section of the race too 🙂

I LOVED the lululemon cheer station and those great signs! Especially “run for: fun, cake, the high, health.” I set a new PR today of 4:14:17!

Thanks for coming out to cheer, Leslie! I wish I knew you’d be at the Lululemon section and I would have kept an eye out for you. That was a fun part to run through; lots of energy.

awww I totally saw your group with the awesome posters and laughed hard at the “I THOUGHT IT WAS 2.62 MILES”

I agree that the Philly course for the most part didn’t thrill me. While I was excited to run in my (new) home city, I was really bummed that we had to run up to Manayunk then turn around and run back on the same course. It was a little demoralizing to have to watch all the faster runners on the other side so close to the end of the race while I still had just a little under half left. Also, running through University City and Fairmount Park was hell on my knees because of all the hills, yuck .

I hope to run a different marathon next fall (maybe Chicago? I hear they have almost no hills!) so I definitely want to spectate at the Philly Marathon next November. I’ve never cheered at a marathon before, but it looks like you guys had a blast!

This is such a neat post! I haven’t run a marathon yet but the cheering in the races I have run is so motivational and always pushes me. Looks like you all had fun!

Philly was my first marathon and your cheer group was great! Wish I’d have known you were there since I love the blog! And even though I don’t run Kelly Drive at all like you, that was definitely a loooong out and back.

Thanks again for the great, motivational signs!
