{dad’s} vintage camera strap

Today I wanted to share a story with you about my dad’s old camera strap.

When I was home in Virginia this past weekend {for Michele’s babies shower} I did a little cleaning out of some of my old stuff in my parents basement, something I pretty much do every time I am down there! I was going through old clothes and seeing what I could donate & what I wanted to bring back to Philly with me. My mom was helping me go through lots of stuff when we came across an old camera bag.

It happened to be my dad’s old camera – his first camera I’m pretty sure – it looked like a mini version of my current camera, except it used film. Sadly, the film it took is no longer made or sold – it would have been awesome to use THAT for photos!

But the old camera find took a quick turn towards being awesome when I saw the leather strap attached to the camera. I saw it and immediately knew it had to be mine. It has a great look to it – the leather is super solid, as are the silver hardware. There is also a great texture to the strap that has been worn away in some places more than others, but you can still tell that it’s there.

Aside from the great look of the strap, I really love the fact that it was my dad’s when he was my age. It has gone with my dad all around the world! My dad told me it has been out West skiing with him, he took it to Europe with him during vacations & it was  with him when he was in the Army traveling the world!

This strap is older than I am! Crazy, right?

I love thinking about all the cool things this little leather strap has seen with my dad & the pictures it helped him take. old vintage camera strap

And I am even more excited to continue it’s picture taking journey with me & my camera!

I am going to break in this camera strap, make it my own &  I am thankful to be able to carry my dad’s stories with me as I go.

What’s something unexpected you’ve found that has special meaning or story behind it?

What a great story and I’m so glad that you want to carry on the tradition and use your dad’s camera strap! Maybe one day your children will stumble across it and use it as well!

I use my dad’s old Pentax K1000 whenever I shoot film. Some of the best shots I’ve ever taken have been with that camera! It has become even more special to me after my dad’s passing two years ago. I only wish he had a sweet vintage case that went along with it because cleaning all the moving parts is a hassle! 🙂
