First Trimester Pregnancy Recap

OMG! I can’t tell you how excited I am for our news to be public. It was so tough keeping a secret like this for so long!

Thank you so much for all the kind words yesterday – my Facebook, Instagram & Twitter was blowing up all day, it was so much fun to read everyone’s messages! I had the biggest smile on my face the whole day. Everything feels so much more real now that we have shared the news with all of our family, friends and the blog world! Three months is a long time to wait to share such exciting news!

So with all that said, it’s time to get you caught up on what’s been going on in my {pregnant} world the past 13 weeks!

* How It All Began *

First of all, yes we were trying. I think it’s funny how many people have asked that question. Makes me giggle. Anyway, after an inkling that we could be pregnant, I took a test in the morning which immediately showed up as positive. <insert happy dance here> Charles was still home when I took the test and it pretty much took everything in me to keep the test to myself until I had more confirmation. I was lucky enough to get an appointment with my OB that day who confirmed with an ultrasound that we were in fact 6 weeks pregnant!

Side Note: After my doctor congratulated us on being pregnant, my first question was – “How many are in there?!” She said -“One Baby” and I said – “Are you sure?!” – She said “Yes” {My BFF just had twins, so I wanted to double check}

Finding out we were pregnant was exciting enough but then finding out we were 6 weeks along was pretty crazy! I had taken pregnancy test twice that same month, two weeks apart, while waiting for my next cycle to start and both were negative {even though as it turns out I WAS pregnant at that time!}. Side Note: My cycle was irregular and on average about 40 days in between each period, which made it difficult to track ovulation but we were lucky enough to get pregnant within 3 months of trying. #yay

* How I Told Charles *

After getting confirmation from my OB that everything looked good I was so excited to share the news with Charles. I had known for a while how I was going to tell him – I picked up a baby onesie & socks from Villanova right after my doctor’s appointment {Villanova is where we met & got married}. I also framed the ultrasound and included the positive pregnancy test in a box. When he got home I told him I had a present for him.

I also secretly videotaped me giving him the present/ him opening/finding out. {See photo’s above} I got the idea from Caitlin and I love the fact that we will forever have this moment captured.

* How We Told The Family *

So long before we found out we were pregnant we had a beach weekend planned with both our parents in Avalon, NJ. It turns out that weekend would be the perfect time to tell our parents the good news. We were 8 weeks at that point and it was so exciting to share the news with someone {finally!}

I framed two of the ultrasound photos – one for each mom – and we told them we had a little gift for them to kick off the weekend celebrations. I asked my brother to say he was taking photos {for the blog} while secretly videotaping them unwrapping the frames and then realizing what they were. Needless to say everyone was so excited! And it’s awesome that we have another awesome video sharing the news with our parents.

telling the grandparents

It was perfect timing to share the news with both families together – especially since my parents live in Virginia & Charles’ parents live in NJ – we couldn’t have planned a more perfect weekend to be able to tell everyone at the same time. It was such a great weekend and I am so thankful it all worked out the way it did!

After sharing the news with our parents we waited until last week to share the news with the rest of our family and friends. We wanted to wait until after the 12 week First Trimester Scan to make the news more public. Again, it was so tough to keep the news to ourselves for so long but we wanted to feel comfortable spreading the news so I am happy with our timeline for sharing.

* First Trimester Recap *

So the first trimester for me was a little rough. I felt like I was hungover 90% of the time, which is seriously no fun. Feeling sick, plus constantly worrying that everything will be ok combined with the fact that you can’t talk to anyone is a big thumbs down. But now that I am in the beginning of the second trimester I have been feeling better every day and how bad I felt a few weeks ago seems like a distant memory because of all the excitement from sharing our news.

Aside from feeling hungover the first trimester for me was an emotional and exhausting one. Like many first time moms I was counting down the seconds in between my prenatal appointments to make sure everything was progressing as it should be. The first trimester is so critical for development it’s such a nerve-wracking time, especially because aside from eating right and getting rest, there isn’t much we can do.

I was also exhausted. Seriously more tired than I ever have been before. Even before we officially found out we were pregnant, I was going to sleep at 8pm most nights, unable to stay awake. Even over 4th of July weekend, I was going to bed so early & sleeping for 11 hours! My parents told me to sleep while we can!

Other than not feeling too great, I have really been focusing on enjoying every moment in this pregnancy. I know if {when?} we have more children, I obviously won’t have this time to myself to really rest, relax and take care of myself – as I will be likely taking care of another little one. So I am enjoying every moment I can, which has been much easier for me as the weeks go on!

Another funny thing about my pregnancy is the weight gain – or lack thereof! If you can believe it, I haven’t gained any weight yet, I am actually about 2-3 lbs. under my pre-pregnancy weight – even though there is a teeny tiny bump/bloat happening there. {I know it’s not baby because he/she is only about the size of a peach!} But it’s funny how I look in the morning compared to after a day of eating/drinking lots of H20! No weight gain but some of my clothes don’t fit! I guess that’s because everything is moving & shifting and my uterus is now the size of a large grapefruit!

Because I wasn’t feeling so great for the past 6 weeks, lots of cereal/mini-bagels were consumed in the first trimester and even more FRUIT – I can’t get enough fruit! Vegetables, especially green ones, haven’t been sounding too good for a while now, but every now and then I have been trying to get down a carrot juice. I also can’t get enough protein! My OB said my levels were a little low so I have been trying to incorporate as much as I can!

13 weeks

So there you have it! I will be doing weekly pregnancy updates, but other than that the blog will still include food, workouts and other fun adventures. I am so excited to be able to share my journey with you.

I know this post was long but please let me know if you have any specific questions for me – feel free to leave a comment, email, tweet, whatever and I will get back to you!

And thank you again for all the congratulations & kind words. They really mean a lot and I appreciate them all!

Do you have any pregnancy words of wisdom for me? Please share!

    Yay! Since I have read your blog for so many years – I am so excited for you!! The first trimester is definitely tough (although being almost 8 months pregnant with twins in this heat is also not a walk a park!) but there are so many unknowns, worrying and mini freak-outs. Plus, I never realized how NORMAL I felt on a day to day basis until I got pregnant! Or how much I took that feeling for granted 🙂 My biggest advice? Try to avoid Dr. Google. It’s easy to get wrapped up in what other expectant moms have posted when you searching strange symptoms or feelings. Just call your OB’s office – they are the experts and they will let you know when you need to be concerned. Either way – this is such a miracle and thanks for inviting us along on your journey!

    I dont know you personally but I got choked up reading how you shared the news. That is so beautiful. I wish you the happiest and healthiest pregnancy ever. Definitely enjoy the quiet.
    I will add that many people like to get preachy when around pregnant women so my advice is to do what feels right for you and forget everything else. You know your body better than anyone!!!

    Congrats! Very exciting news and at least you won’t be in your third trimester in this heat. I honestly can’t imagine feeling hungover, nauseous and super tired and having to go to work every day. And yes, sleep while you can.

    Congratulations!!!! 🙂 I absolutely LOVE that you were able to capture everyone’s honest first impression – so much genuine excitement in their faces! No kids for me yet, one day though. Wishing you all the best, I will definitely have to be following along with your baby bump news.

    Congrats Leslie! I’m due in early December, about 19 weeks right now. I just felt the baby move for the first time last week and let me tell you…it was a crazy feeling! Get excited for that in a few weeks.

    Congrats Leslie!

    I am a relatively new reader & am so happy for you.

    Will you be finding out the baby’s gender?

    Congrats! Pregnancy was the absolute best time for me…I was so happy all the time! Our baby boy is almost 3 months now and sometimes I miss my bump:0 My advice is to keep working out as long as possible! I continued to exercise (just more moderately) every single day up until delivery. I actually walked 4 miles the morning before I went in to the hospital to have him! It helped so much with labor/delivery and then recovery. Mr. OB said that the reason I handled L/D so well was because I was in good shape. So stick with it girl!

    The 2nd tri was fantastic for me (I am now almost 29 weeks), so enjoy it for sure! yay for babies!

    Congrats!! I hope you have a wonderfully smooth pregnancy!

    I didn’t gain any weight with my son until late in the second trimester but then BAM! Hello big butt. Not cool. Hopefully you will not have that happen to you.

    The best advice I can give you is to find what works best for you and your family with regards to your little one. You’ll read so many books, blogs, and whatnot and everyone is shouting at you to do it this way bc this is the only right way to get your baby to sleep/eat/potty train…whatever. Don’t be afraid to mix up a few tips to get your own little routine going.

    Prego advice=enjoy it. Enjoy eating what you crave. I ate garlic bread every day. Could be what gave me the big butt from above but it was the only thing I wanted. And also, if you start feeling crappy towards the end (I had horrible sciatica) go see a chiropractor who specializes in pregnant women. It was the only thing that helped me. I probably would have married mine but she’s a chick and we’re both already married so no dice.

    This is a natural occurrence and can be easily mistaken for acne.
    The first thing you need to realize is that contrary to what many skin experts
    believe, the food that you eat has a lot to do with acne. Toothpaste to Remove Hair Dye From Skin –
    Wet the dye stained area of skin with warm water.
