My First Week As A Stay At Home Mom

So some of you may or may not already know this but now that Baby Brooks is here I will be staying home with him full time. I have spent the last year doing various freelance and marketing projects and will continue to do what I can on the side but the majority of my time will be spent taking care of our new little man and for that I am thankful, lucky, blessed, grateful and so happy – I can’t imagine any better job in the entire world.

I was extremely lucky with the fact that after Brooks was born, Charles was able to stay home from work with us for 2 weeks. It was an awesome time to spend together as a new family of three and also amazing to have an extra set of hands as we figured out caring for a newborn together.

After Charles went back to work my mom came up from Virginia to stay with us and help out for the next two weeks. Having her here was amazing for me and she loved soaking up every moment with her grandson.

So this meant that I have had constant help at home with our little guy for the first 4 weeks of his life, not to mention all the visitors and friends and family that have come by to say hello. It’s been all sorts of awesome but those first few weeks sure have flown by fast and last week was the first time where I was actually alone with Brooks, if you can believe it!

Ok, ok – I lied. Last Monday was supposed to be the first day I was actually all alone with him, but it snowed and Charles stayed home from work since we had Brooks’ one month doctors appointment in the afternoon.

One month update – Brooks is weighing in at 10 lbs 2 oz and 22.5 inches – He grew 2 pounds & 3 inches in the past month since birth! He also got a one month shot, which I believe was more traumatic for me than it was for him.

So back to my first week alone with Brooks –  I wasn’t nervous at all to be by myself with him. Not sure why but that was a question I got a lot leading up to our first week alone together. I think after taking him home from the hospital my “mom gene” kicked in and everything has felt like second nature to me. I have been really comfortable with him, which has surprised even me a bit – before having my own baby, holding other peoples babies was a little weird for me, but holding Brooks feels awesome and so right.

He has managed to make everything so easy for me these first 5 weeks as I made the transition into real motherhood, and especially our first week alone together. Seriously, he is the best baby ever.

{knock on wood that he continues to stay so chill}

I’m sure every new parent thinks so about their own child but Brooks is such a dream. He cries when he is hungry or has a dirty diaper and a little bit at night between the 7-9 o’clock hours {the witching hours?} when he is tired and other than that he is alert, awake, all smiles and entertains himself {and me!} all day long.

I couldn’t ask for a better baby.

He has been so much fun getting to know as his personality comes out a bit more and more each week and I feel so spoiled that I get to spend all this amazing, quality alone time with such an awesome little guy.

Side Note: I’m obsessed with his little toes

And adorable sleepers with cute footsies!

A big milestone during our first week along together -> I even managed to give B a bath – all by myself! I was quite proud of this accomplishment.

We have a new schedule at night that we put into effect this past week too. Since I started pumping, Charles has been giving Brooks a bottle each night {of pumped breast milk} – our new schedule for the evenings is I feed the baby before we eat dinner and then Charles is in charge of the next feed, usually between the 9-10 o’clock hour. This has been awesome because it frees me up to have a glass of wine with dinner, or go to bed at 8pm, and it gives Charles some quality time with Brooks too! Having a few hours in bed without the baby in the room has been key for me getting enough sleep!

Even though Brooks has been going 3-4 hours in between feedings at night, its still nice to have a head start on sleep, allowing me to function like a human during the day!

Another Side Note: I am obsessed with little boy clothes, especially ones with bow ties.

And little button down onesies.

Also my adjustable sling has been amazing for keeping a sleeping baby close & being able to get things done around the house, including writing this blog post!

All in all, it was an amazing first week together – everyone survived with smiles on our faces.

Bring on week two!

And since it was so gorgeous out this past weekend, here are some photos from our time out and about in the city, soaking up the sun this past Saturday & Sunday –
