What I Learned from My First Race Post-Baby

Thank you all for the amazing responses to my first {5 Miler} race postpartum! All the kind words made me feel fantastic! I have loved getting back into the swing of things in terms of working out post-baby. My body has been a little shaky at times, but it knows what to do & I find it best to just jump right in!

Since my 5 miler race 2 weeks ago, I’ve taken killer spinning & barre classes, have been going on long walks with the babe & the dog all.the.time and I think this week will be the week I take my shiny new BOB out for its inaugural run with Brooks! It feels so amazing to be getting my sweat on once again – and it’s perfect timing because the weather has finally been cooperating, it’s been a beautiful week in Philly!

I took some time to look back at what I learned from my first race, post-baby & I wanted to share it with you. Feel free to add any of your best tips for getting back into shape & fitness expectations after pregnancy!

1- Expect the Unexpected – Prepare for the worst/hope for the best! When I signed up for this race, I had no idea if I was actually going to be able to leave the house that morning. I wasn’t sure about Brooks’ feeding schedule, how he would be feeling, how I would be feeling, how the night before would be or really anything! At this point, nothing’s up to me – everything revolved about Brooks and his wants/needs. I was  hoping the stars would align and I would be able to run, but I was prepared for anything to happen. Luckily, everything worked out, but as a new mom it’s easy to see my time and my schedule is no longer my own.

2- Enjoy the Time Alone – This was one of the few times since giving birth two months ago that I have been alone. I’ve had the little man attached to my hip {or my boobs?} every day for eight weeks at the point of the race – I’ve loved every minute of it and wouldn’t want it any other way, but it’s crazy to think that this 5 mile run, for a little under an hour, was the time for me to be alone with my thoughts. It was almost like I didn’t know what to do with myself all by myself {with 1,000+ other runners!}

3- It Felt Amazing to Just RUN! – Like I mentioned in my race recap post, I planned on walking/jogging most of the race, since I had just been cleared for exercise post giving birth 2 weeks prior. I hadn’t had much time to train, other than taking lots of long walks but I was excited to just get out there and start moving again! I didn’t plan on running but when the race started my legs just wanted to RUN, and I let them!

4 – Holy Boobs – Since I am still nursing, let me just say that the girls are rather large & in charge. I need to invest in some new sports bras because my old ones, just aren’t going to cut it with the current state of things! Running while being a breastfeeding mama is a different experience than just being a regular runner. Did I mention I need to go sports bra shopping?!

5- Best Finish Line Crowd – Ending the race with my little man at the Finish Line was the best thing ever. I think knowing that he was at the end waiting for me made me run that much faster! Doesn’t get any better than that {even if he was taking a nap!}

    Oh man, I hear you on the sports bras. My little man is 12 weeks old and while I’ve been working out in some capacity since about 5 weeks, I really can’t run quite yet. I found that I was getting plugged milk ducts everytime I ran, so it’s been elliptical and power walking for now. I have the Moving Comfort Juno bra which was great during pregnancy but it just isn’t cutting it anymore!

    Isn’t it funny how the little things in life are so important now that you are mom! Yes, you need some good support while exercising pronto!

    Yes to the sports bras while nursing! I loved Moving Comfort ones- I found two of their styles really helped. And now being in the first tri again, I’m having the same problem.

    I did Couch to 5K after giving birth. I had to ease into running a little more than you did! Way to go!
