Old City Philadelphia Segway Tour

This weekend I had the opportunity to enjoy an afternoon strolling around the city of Brotherly Love in a whole new way –

by Segway!

My parents are big segway fans – they’ve gone on tours in Washington, DC & Gettysburg – they always told me how much fun they had, so Charles & I thought it would be fun to do a segway tour with my parents in Philadelphia!

This weekend we cleared our schedules, my mother-in-law came over to babysit the little man {Thanks MM!} and we headed out to enjoy a leisurely Sunday afternoon stroll around the city.

There were some different tour options but we decided to go with the Old City Segway tour ->

This tour is approximately 1.5 to 2 hours long, (including safety instructions and hands on training) and covers roughly 3.5 miles. The Old City Tour is our most popular tour offering views and historical facts to more than 20 of Philly’s most sought after attractions. This tour is the perfect snapshot for visitors to get acquainted with the Old City and Historical/Waterfront Districts as well as learn memorable historical Philly stories. Glide, discover, and explore while also learning how our country was formed on those very streets.  Some of the sites you’ll see include: the Liberty Bell, Betsy Ross House, Washington Square, Penn’s Landing, Powel House, 1st Bank, various murals and art, and so much more!

We watched a short safety video and then it was time to get on the segways!

Side Note – Check out my Instagram for a little video of my first few moments on the segway!

It was a little scary for about 5 seconds, just learning how to stand on the segway and maneuver it around, but I got the hang of it fairly quickly and it was a lot of fun. There were 8 people in our group and everyone got some hands on training on their segways before we headed out into the city.

We learned all the basics in the basement of a car garage down by Independence Hall in Philadelphia – it had a little section reserved for us so we could roll around on our own. It was a nice way to get used to the device, but it was a little dark for photos!

After everyone was instructed and feeling comfortable on their segway, we were ready to roll – literally.

We headed out on the busy streets of Philadelphia to explore Old Town via segway.

The tour was a lot of fun – we had earbuds in and a guide explaining a bit of the history that was passed on our route. I think it’s so great to be a tourist in my own town – even though I’ve lived here for many years, there are still so many sights I haven’t been able to see, and this was a great way to be out in the gorgeous fall weather, exploring.

As I mentioned before, there are different tour options available with different routes and lasting different lengths of time – we chose the 1.5 hour tour option and it was the perfect amount of time to see a different part of the city and take in the sights. AND it’s a great length of time for your first experience on a segway – even though you are staining there, your legs are working to guide you in the direction you want to go, and they get sore after a while! We took a pit stop about halfway through the tour to shake out our legs and it was very much needed!

All in all it was a great way to explore the city on a beautiful day. It was lovely to be outside in the fresh air and we got to cover a lot of ground with a lot of history in a short amount of time!

We had a absolute blast rolling around the city – I would definitely do another segway tour, in Philly or anywhere else! It was the perfect way to spend  an afternoon exploring!

Have you ever done a segway tour?

If so, where?

A huge thanks to my friends at Philly Segway & Wheel Fun Rentals for the complimentary tickets!
