What I Learned From My First Run After Baby #2

So I sort of had a momentous occasion on Friday.

I went for my first run since baby #2 and it was all sorts of awesome.

Yes, Graham is 4 months old. Yes, I was cleared for exercise at 6 weeks. Yes, I haven’t been doing much since then – except for chasing around after 2 under two – which totally counts, right?

I’m not sure if it was my 2016 goals that I put out there, the new year or just the mild winter we’ve been having, but I randomly decided to head out for a run on Friday morning after Graham went down for a nap and while my MIL was hanging out with Brooks. It was one of the best decisions I made in a long time.

Here’s what I learned during my first two miles {of 2016!} after baby #2:

  1. I was pleasantly surprised to feel that my body really remembered what to do on a run. Sounds silly, but it’s been a long time for me, but it really didn’t feel that way. It felt so good to be moving in that way again and I was happy to just be out there running to run.
  2. I need to remember to wear a super supportive sports bra – because I totally forgot to put a good one on and with nursing, I seriously needed one! Won’t be making that mistake again!
  3. I wasn’t sure how far to go or how long I would last, but I ran the first mile, felt great and decided to wrap it up with two miles for the day – seemed like a good milage to start out with! It was nice to just go out there and not have a plan or a deadline or even a specific goal – my only goal was to run and that was accomplished when I started lacing up my sneakers!
  4. Seriously, I needed that run in so many ways. It was amazing to have some me time, to be along with my thoughts and just doing something solo for myself. Felt amazing and it was nice to just have a few minutes of quiet {even though I totally was jamming out to Rhianna and Nicki Minaj!}first run
  5. Now I know why I see so many moms out there running solo – it’s just nice to get away for a bit and if you have to use an excuse as a run to get some quiet time, I get it! Ha!
  6. This mild winter weather we’ve been having in Philadelphia has been totally amazing and is making getting back into the workout world so much easier.
  7. I can already see how making the decision to go for a run has affected my health even in the past 3 days – I’ve made better choices in my eating and drinking and been more excited to get out there and get back into shape. I can already see how it’s been a upward spiral into getting back into the swing of things!
  8. Ummm…and can I also say that I was looking forward to the soreness after the first run back. If you are a runner, you will know what I am talking about. The soreness of working some muscles you might have forgotten about for a while there. I love that soreness – it hurts so good!

And wouldn’t you know it that my choice to run on Friday has already caused me to want to run again!? I went out there on Sunday morning randomly with my neighbor + fellow mama, Kelly for her first run post baby and even though I was still sore from my first run, it felt so great to be out there again! It’s also so much more fun to have a running buddy that’s just starting up again like me – I’m way more motivated when I have someone to run with an hold me accountable. I am loving this feeling and am already planning to get some more miles in this week!

I’m also planning to add some other classes into the mix too – I can’t wait to spin again! But I thought it would be good to build up a bit of a base before hitting up a hardcore spin class! Ha! But either way, it just feels so good to be running again – let’s call it a comeback, shall we?!

What are you looking forward to starting up again in 2016?

We are only 11 days it! It’s not to late to start fresh!
